Cult/ Deep Red at HOME
Tom Grieve, Cinema EditorResponsible for titles such as The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Suspiria, Italian film director Dario Argento’s 1975 Deep Red sees an obnoxious jazz pianist (David Hemmings) team up with a local journalist (Daria Nicolodi) to track down a mysterious axe wielding murderer.
The film is an exquisite example of Giallo — a style of grisly, visually extravagant Italian thriller that proved popular throughout the 1970s. It’s also one of Argento’s best, owing to some avant-garde moments, baroque production design, a legendary off-kilter Goblin score, and memorably creepy murder sequences.
