Chelping is back, with Casey Bailey and Ella Otomewo headlining the 16th instalment, plus an open mic hosted by Matt Abbott. Taking place in the stunning surrounds of 254-year-old The Leeds Library, this is one of Leeds’ leading poetry nights, with previous headliners including the latest TS.Eliot Prize winner Joelle Taylor. Anthony Anaxagorou, Sabrina Mahfouz and Theresa Lola have also read at the night, as have Toby Campion, Jess Green and Cecilia Knapp.

At the latest Chelping, hear from Birmingham Poet Laureate 2020–2022 Casey Bailey, whose second full poetry collection Please Do Not Touch was published by Burning Eye last year. Born and raised in Birmingham, the writer, performer and educator was named as one of Birmingham Live’s Birmingham 30 under 30’s in 2018 and was the Greater Birmingham Future Face of Arts and Culture 2020. He was commissioned by the BBC to write The Ballad Of The Peaky Blinders, which won a Webby Award.

Ella Otomewo is a poet, performer and facilitator, who has led performance poetry workshops for schools, universities, community groups, libraries and festivals. Her most recent collaborations have been with Quarantine, Robert F Kennedy Human Rights and Manchester City of Literature, and she was also commissioned as part of Nymphs & Thugs’ Disarm Hate x Poetry project in 2021. In her next project, Ella is working with Manchester’s Z-arts and Young Identity to devise an interactive performance piece for children exploring our relationship with water using puppetry, poetry, task-based performance and sensory theatre.

Matt Abbott is a poet, educator and activist from Wakefield. His debut poetry collection Two Little Ducks was published by Verve Poetry Press in 2018 and includes poems from his one-man show, whoch earned a string of 5* reviews at Edinburgh Fringe 2017 and on a 2018 UK theatre tour. His kids’ poetry collection A Hurricane In My Head was published by Bloomsbury in 2019 and was a National Poetry Day selected title. He formed Nymphs & Thugs, the UK’s leading spoken word record label, in 2015 and runs the new regular night Tupthumping.
