Ultra-violent and ultra-stylish: this atypical mob movie mixes its detailed depiction of Vegas’ criminal enterprises with down-and-dirty, soap-opera tragedy for a woozy rise-and-fall tale. The film reunites Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in another razor-sharp look at the mechanics of gangsterism. Whilst Casino might not quite hit the heights of Goodfellas (and few films do), it’s another example of Marty’s immense ability – shown most lately with the extraordinary The Wolf of Wall Street and Silence – to immerse an audience in an unsavoury world and challenge them to unpick the various immoral allures of greed, power and violence.
