Every year the People’s History Museum treats its visitors to a different display of the many protest banners contained within its archive. Often the themes apparent in UK and international politics are deftly reflected in the choice of banners highlighting how cyclical or unrelenting some issues are. This year, you are being invited to join in with banner bingo, a quest to find different images contained within banners across the whole museum.

Although the banners themselves are easy to find with their bright colours and purposefully attention grabbing messages, it takes better skills of observation to find the finer details and hidden icons that you’ll see on your bingo card. Once you’ve completed a line, take pride in declaring ‘house!’ and for those who manage to complete the whole card, the right to shout ‘bingo!’ is reserved for you.

The bingo card will take you through both galleries in the museum as well as the banner hall so whilst looking for those particularly poignant icons you’ll experience the exhibitions and discover the stories behind outstanding individuals who may have held the banners you’re seeking.

You can collect your bingo card from the welcome desk. All ages can partake in banner bingo with more than one option of card difficulty available. It’s a great way to get easily distracted younger ones interested in the exhibitions and curious about political history. Once you’ve completed your search you’ll receive a small prize for taking part which you can take away and cherish.

Be sure to check out PHM’s full programme of events activities and visiting exhibitions which this year features the crafting group Fabric of Protest, playful protest space for the youngest radicals and protest trails around the galleries. Their cafe is also a beautiful palace to grab a bite to eat if you’re in that end of town and is run by social enterprise Open Kitchen.
