France, 1945. In a dark corner behind the front line, Private Eddie Slovik’s life hangs in the balance while a group of senior officers determine his fate. As war rages across Europe, a different battle unfolds as the men weigh their orders against their own humanity.

This new play, The Execution of Private Slovik, is a tense, unflinching drama about the human cost of obedience. Will the senior officers follow their orders, or will they defy the chain of command? With time running out, loyalties splinter, tempers flare, and each man involved is pushed to confront where duty ends and moral responsibility begins.

Inspired by true events surrounding the trial and execution of Eddie Slovik, the only American soldier executed for desertion during World War II, this is not a verbatim history lesson. While grounded in documented fact, certain characters, scenarios and dialogue are fictionalised to explore the ethical and emotional conflicts at the heart of the case; speculation makes room for the most difficult questions.

Written and directed by Liverpool-based, award-winning filmmaker and theatre director Alex King, and produced by Old Fruit Jar Productions, the play lands at 53Two Theatre after strong fringe outings, with its Wirral Theatre Festival run described by The Reviews Hub as “a powerful achievement”. Expect urgent performances, tightly coiled debate, and a drama that refuses easy moral release.
