Step into a magical world where music and art come to life, as renowned author and illustrator James Mayhew interprets orchestral favourites live on stage.

An ambassador of art, music and culture for children, James Mayhew has spent the last 35 years introducing the great works of art to kids, whether through his beautiful books in which famous paintings come alive, or his ‘live on stage’ concerts, which see him joining musicians and orchestras to narrate and illustrate during performances of orchestral classics. In Mayhew’s hands, art becomes an adventure, capturing the imaginations of children and indeed adults in a way that few can do.

Enter Mayhew’s new show, A Symphony of Stories, in which he’ll bring his illustrations to life before your eyes, against the backdrop of orchestral favourites performed by RNCM students. Drawing on his critically acclaimed children’s book Once Upon A Tune and the eagerly anticipated A Symphony of Stories, Mayhew’s artwork – created from scratch on stage – will be projected onto a screen so the audience can watch his illustrations grow in time to the music.

Wrangle with the magic broom in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, soar to new heights in Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, and marvel at The Planets as Mayhew’s quicksilver illustrations become a captivating part of the performance, offering children an irresistible way into the classical canon.

This afternoon concert is part of the RNCM’s Young Explorers series, which is all about introducing kids to orchestral music in a fun and interactive environment. No formal concert etiquette here. These shows are very relaxed, drawing children (and their grown-ups) into the unique power of the live orchestra in way that’s thoroughly accessible.

Whether you’re young or simply young at heart, this unique show promises to delight and inspire.
