Playtime: Summer Family Activities at The Whitworth
Shekina Rose, Families EditorThe Whitworth and Whitworth Park provide great spaces to play, get creative and have fun all year round. The summer holidays are no different, and families of Manchester are invited to Playtime at The Whitworth, with free events running from 2 – 31 August, exploring the art of play.
Young people and their grown ups can enjoy the Scrap Studio, sketching stations, Whitworth Minecraft, a sensory area for babies and all sorts of fun taking place both indoors and outdoors, in a beautiful space where art meets nature, with different activities taking place throughout the week.
On Wednesday 3 August (National Play Day), enjoy a fun-packed day for children and young people of all ages. Whitworth Park will be brimming with creativity, play, games, activities, arts and crafts, free food and goodies!
Each week throughout August, on Tuesday to Thursday, wander across to the Scrap Studio, which will be taking place in the Clore Garden Studio, packed full of open-ended, recycled equipment, including old tyres, large reels, huge tubes and pipes, big boxes, crates, and so much more, to be played with and used for creativity in the Art Garden and Park. The Scrap Baby sessions are an extension of this incredible Scrap Studio, also taking place Tuesdays to Thursdays, and will be an opportunity for sensory play using objects from The Whitworth Shop of Creativity, where young people and their grown ups can experience play with low-cost recycled objects.
On Tuesday to Sunday, head to the Whitworth Minecraft area in the School of Creativity space. Play and build at the specially designed Whitworth Minecraft arcade machines.
The quiet mornings take place on Wednesday 10, 17, 24 and 31 August. These mornings are multi-sensory, open-ended play for families with additional needs. During these sessions, the School of Creativity will be closed so visitors can enjoy a quieter space.
On Friday 5 and 19 August, 1-3pm, Grandparents and grandchildren are invited to an afternoon of art-themed activities with the Whitworth’s Age Friendly group, the Artivists, and on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August Black Gold Arts – Whitworth Takeover, will opens its doors to families for a two-day outdoor music and arts festival that showcases the very best, live music, DJs, dance, performance, fashion, and a catwalk, all for free.
