RSPB St. Aidan’s near Leeds is a landscape that tells the story of nature reclaiming resource from industry. The mine was a hive of industrial activity before being flooded by the river Aire in 1988. It then, in 2002, ceased to be a part of any human activity, becoming a nature reserve home to hundreds of species. Explore this remarkable landscape at the intersection between nature and humanity with a guided history walk.

One of the most striking parts of RSPB St. Aiden’s is ‘Oddball’, a 1200-tonne dragline excavator once thought to be the largest in Europe. Towering above the waterline, this colossal piece of machinery now acts as a home to a plethora of nesting birds. Like a gigantic mechanical mother-hen watching over a delicately balanced community. On the walk, you’ll learn about the rewilding process, ecosystems that have been nurtured with considerate human intervention so that animals and plants can safely live amongst the ruins of industry.

Whether you’re a keen ornithologist or have an invested interest in Yorkshire’s mining history, the walk is a rich delve into both these seemingly juxtaposing worlds. Discover for yourself how their symbiotic and dissonant relationship has created a haven for wildlife.

It’s worth noting this event has limited accessibility as it does involve some steep terrain, however, those with other access needs are encouraged to get in touch beforehand to discuss options. A mobility scooter is available to hire as well as more accessible walk options. As is typical in Yorkshire, walkers should be prepared to face all weather conditions, including appropriate outer layers and footwear. To protect the species resident on the site, walkers are also asked to leave dogs at home and enjoy the company of the other animals you’ll encounter.

A warm beverage is included with the price of the ticket, you can warm up and enjoy some refreshment as a group after exploring RSBP St. Aiden’s.
