Group Chat at University of Huddersfield, Huddersfield 18 November 2019 Entrance is free

Remember ringtones? They used to play on your phone before you put it on silent for the rest of your life. Group Chat is the outcome of a collaborative project led by experimental musician James Mabbett. Leading school students in a series of workshops, Mabbett will come up with a new composition based on their phone tunes of choice. Students will be added to a WhatsApp group chat and told to set their own notification ringtone for it. Combining their ringtones, the students will blend their sounds together, structuring each one of their personal songs into a full-blown piece of music. The result will be Group Chat, a jubilant musical shouting match – the kind of noise you get when everyone starts sending a message at the same time.
