This September, Liverpool becomes home to the the 194th British Science Festival. Co-hosted by Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Liverpool, this week-long celebration is set to take over the city with a mix of science, art, performance, and fun for all ages.

From Wednesday 10 to Sunday 14 September, discover a city transformed by science – and not just lab coats and bunsen burners. We’re talking street raves in museums, DNA jewellery-making, a carnival-style dance show inspired by migratory birds and more! It’s basically an awesome festival for scientific minds – without the mud.

Expect free talks, hands-on workshops and drop-ins happening all across the city centre, docks and university campuses. Highlights include:

  • Toothsome art made entirely from human teeth… sounds kind of creepy but it will be brilliant – we’re sure!
  • A morning rave at the Museum of Liverpool, don your most sparkly glitter!
  • A walking tour of Liverpool’s scientific and historical, exploring links between science and slavery.
  • Panels with subjects including autistic joy, the school to prison pipeline, trees’ communication networks, the ethics of at-home ancestry testing, and the hidden women of science
  • A rapper busking with a dinosaur-themed freestyle…
  • If that’s not enough to convince your teenager to look up from their phone, there’s also influencer Tilly Lockey on the lineup, as well as Time Team’s genealogist Sophie Kay, and quantum physics chats with CERN’s Mark Thompson, and more. More, we hear you say!

Whether your young scientist is obsessed with space, fossils or just slime, they’ll love it.

Did we mention it’s free? All of it. Thanks to the British Science Association, this is a rare opportunity to explore the wonder of science without spending a penny on entrance fees.

Plan your visit: Keep an eye on the British Science Festival website for the full schedule and booking info (some events may require advance registration).

Heads up: Activities are spread across multiple venues, so wear your comfiest shoes and expect to get your steps in.
