Pete the Temp

Homer to Hip Hop – A People’s History of Spoken Word at The Edge Theatre and Arts Centre, Chorlton 20 May 2022 Tickets from £13.00 — Book now

Alternative variety night Pen:Chant presents the new touring show from national slam poetry champion, musician and comic Pete the Temp.

Alongside Pete the Temp, the evening features support from local rising star and BBC Words First winner PA Bitez, plus a Q&A chaired by Pen:Chant’s Ben Mellor

Homer to Hip Hop: A People’s History of Spoken Word is a fun and fascinating journey through the poetic movements that have shaped history. Learn why wordsmiths – from ballad singers and beat poets to icons of dub, punk and hip hop – have always been vilified, feared and revered. Tongue Fu calls the show: “A charming wild rumpus of a ride – part lecture, part performance and utterly engaging.”

Pete the Temp has featured on BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service and Newsnight, and his new book Stage Invasion: Poetry & the Spoken Word Renaissance is described as “ground-breaking”, with The Verb’s Ian McMillan saying: This is the book we have all been waiting for.”

Alongside Pete the Temp, the evening – part of Chorlton Arts Festival – features support from local rising star and BBC Words First winner PA Bitez, plus a Q&A chaired by Pen:Chant’s Ben Mellor, with panelists including representatives from Manchester’s diverse poetry scene.
