Literature Events in the North

Sarah-Clare Conlon, Literature Editor

From tongue-twisters to twisty page-turners, we have all kinds of spoken word surprises in the latest literature round-up.

In Liverpool, the experimental is elevated at the European Poetry Festival where collaborative avant-garde one-offs are the order of the day.

In Manchester, scene stalwart Word Central is celebrating nine fabulous years and an innovative new exhibition, I’ve Never  Read Elizabeth Gaskell, is unveiled at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, featuring work by its three young writers-in-residence. Lancaster-based writer Jenn Ashworth is talking about her much-anticipated book The Parallel Path to Helen Mort, poet Jo Bell will be reading from her memoir Boater at The Portico Library, while the summer chapter of MLF is unfolding, with visiting readers including Yellowface author Rebecca F Kuang.

Another must-see headliner, Rosie Garland, is gracing Leeds regular Chemistry, while “queen of psychological thrillers” Lisa Jewell heads to nearby Truman Books.

Leaf through our guides to Bookshops in Manchester and the UNESCO Manchester City of Literature, plus our literary places in LiverpoolLeeds, Sheffield and Cumbria.
