No one needs a reminder of how our modern consumer lifestyles are affecting the planet and natural world around us. However, shops like Steep and Filter offer a way to reduce that impact whilst buying high quality produce. The shop originally opened in 2018 as an eco friendly coffee and tea house, but quickly expanded to become a place where people can shop conveniently without the use of excessive plastic and chemicals.

They were included in the Lonely Planet 19/20 edition as the best place to get coffee in Skipton as well as winning a 2019 Green Apple Award for environmental best practice. Even with the expansion their coffee is still excellent. Choose from 7 single origin varieties, which the friendly staff are more than happy to advise you on depending on your preference and taste.

Aside from coffee, the shop holds a perfect balance of fresh fruit and veg from local suppliers and non perishable refill based goods. The ethos behind the refill system is to minimise the amount of waste involved at every stage of the shopping experience. So shoppers are encouraged to bring their own containers, which can then be refilled rather than buying excess amounts of packaged food. You can see the shop’s floor change with the seasons, making the shopping that little bit more exciting. No longer will you walk down the same aisles of the same supermarket knowing exactly what to expect.

In the refill shop there is everything you’d need to fill a well stocked pantry. Their selection of flours, seeds, pulses, dried fruit and spices (to name but a tiny slice of what they have to offer) is much more varied than your average supermarket, allowing you to open your kitchen up to new flavours and dishes. In addition to the dry goods, you can find specialist milks, tofu and other dairy free products that vegans rave about.  Often, the shop also stocks high quality essentials like locally baked loaves and other sweeter baked goods.

We thoroughly recommend calling by Steep and Filter to pick up some eco friendly shopping and excellent coffee, if you get the chance.
