Guided walk: Two Cultures, One Corridor

Susie Stubbs

A walking tour that shows how art and science have always rubbed shoulders along Manchester’s cultural corridor.

This guided walk – led by the brilliant Anne Beswick – moves due south from the city centre and along Manchester’s so-called cultural corridor, Oxford Road. This road, the home of two universities, numerous galleries, high-tech research labs and medical facilities, theatres, cinemas and much more has long been a place where art and science have merged. Artists such as Walter Crane, LS Lowry and Thomas Heatherwick have shared these streets with the likes of Alan Turing, Marie Stopes and Ernest Rutherford – and between them have brought fame and prosperity to our city. This being Manchester, the beat goes on. Leaps forward in both art and science continue to be made, and this walking tour looks not just at the city’s illustrious past but gives a glimpse of its future, too. Meet at Cornerhouse, 70 Oxford Street, M1 5NH, 10am-11.30pm (ends at Manchester Museum), Saturday 12 October, £6.
