Expand your knowledge and have your mind blown at the Windermere Science festival. This weekend of talks, workshops and events will be taking over the Windermere Jetty Museum with a hands on attitude to what we’re only just learning about our world.

You can hear directly from those at the brink of new discoveries with talks from award winning material scientist Anna Ploszajski, the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry. There will also be a team of scientists from the University of Manchester who will be talking about their Nobel prize winning discovery Graphene, a wonder material that has a plethora of exciting potential uses.

You can embark on a canoe safari with ecologist Dr Ellie Mackay, where you’ll learn about the lake’s glacial origins and who is eating what in the lake. Or for something more land based you can join artist Charlie Whinney and learn how to steam bend wood. Throughout the weekend a dalek will be hanging about keeping an eye on the humans, a particularly exciting guest for those who are more into sci fi than straight up sci.

Sitting in between the worlds of science, history and theatre will be the Science Viking, a time travelling weaponry specialist here to show you how forces work. Festival Favourite Professor Pumpernickel will also be returning due to popular demand with an array of bangs, bunsen burners and bedlam.

Windermere Jetty Museum is a beacon of hands-on culture placed on the very edge of the water. Previously a boat house, it now contains a selection of heritage boats as well as a comprehensive history of the area and the town’s relationship with the lake. It also has one of the best views you can find from a cafe in the lakes with expansive windows looking directly onto the water. The science festival is just one of many cultural events in their year round calendar. Be sure to check out the other theatre, dance and live music you can find at the museum via their website.
