Hyde Park as an area of Leeds has always been forward thinking, politically active and full of nooks containing microcosms hidden to the ignorant eye. It’s no surprise then, that this area has a rich history of queer activity. Tour guide Kit Heyam brings this often lesser known heritage to life with a Queer History Tour of Hyde Park and Woodhouse. Explore the multitudes of the streets you walk down everyday, the pubs you drink in and the bus stops you wait at.

Starting at The Bookish Type, you’ll visit sites where the first meetings of campaign groups and support networks took place. It’s a reminder of how far public opinion and politics have come in terms of LGBTQIA+ people’s quality of life. However, seeing the real places where the humble beginnings of massive movements formed can be an empowering experience when you’re considering the work for respect and equality still to be done.

As you wander through these two inner suburban centres of Leeds you’ll hear stories of early Pride squat parties. Decades old legacies of wartime gender queers and gay hotlines. This alternative world was one often born out of necessity but the withstanding principles have helped shape the culture of the area into one with vibrant arts scenes and great parties.

The tour lasts around an hour and attendees are encouraged to book in advance as well as turn up 15 mins before the starting time so as to avoid delays. The tour will happen in light rain so be sure to bring weather appropriate clothing for walking outdoors.

Often the histories of marginalised groups become invisible and forgotten over the passage of time which is why walks like Kit’s tour are as vital as they are educational and enjoyable. The Tour is just one of many events hosted by queer bookshop The Bookish Type. Check out their website for details of future events.
