Sushi Making with Leeds Cookery School
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorOften, we see sushi as a highly-skilled craft of perfection. This may be true in some cases, however, don’t let that stop you from getting to grips with a nigiri yourself. Leeds Cookery School is encouraging people to explore this delicate and beautifully constructed cuisine with a sushi-making workshop.
Sushi is more than just a delicious food, it’s Japan’s most internationally recognised cuisine and carries with it a history, culture and artistry as well as a particularly flexible flavour palette. Sushi is a meeting point for tradition and creativity through the catalyst of perfectly formed rice-based bites. During the workshop, you’ll talk about these traditions as you explore four of the most recognisable rolls.
You’ll start with a classic nigiri, this staple sushi is the best to start with as you learn how to handle the rice before delicately dressing it with a slice of deftly prepared protein. From here, you’ll move on to maki. These are the familiar small rolls with vegetables or fish on the inside and roasted seaweed on the outside. They’re quick and easy to make and also act as a perfect snack-sized sushi.
After mastering the maki you’ll move on to the uramaki. This literally translates as ‘inside out’ and is very similar to the maki apart from the rice and seaweed swap places. After this, you’ll learn how to form sushi just by using your hand to make some temaki (bundles of rice and filling enclosed in nori seaweed).
All ingredients and tools are provided so just turn up – ready to learn, make and most importantly eat. It is recommended that participants have proficient knife skills so this course is probably best suited to those with food/ cooking experience who are looking to expand their culinary skills.
If sushi making isn’t your thing, check out the many, many other courses and workshops Leeds Cookery School is offering at both their Kirkgate Market and Gipton sites.
