Warrington Museum & Art Gallery

Creative Tourist

Warrington Museum & Art Gallery is one of the oldest museums in the country. Opened in 1857, much of the quintessential character of the building has been preserved, including its original glass display cabinets which contain objects from its 200,000-strong collection; covering natural sciences, antiquities, social history, numismatics, ethnology, fine and decorative arts and an extensive local photographic archive.

In addition to the permanent displays, the museum also provides an award-winning programme of events and temporary exhibitions. Recent shows have featured work by Banksy, Tracey Emin and Sam Taylor-Wood, and the museum runs free family-friendly craft activities in the school holidays.

Bridgewater Canal

Running from Runcorn to Leigh, the Bridgewater Canal is 65km long. Constructed over 250 years ago by the Duke of Bridgewater, it is considered to be the first true canal in England. Constructed during the Industrial Revolution, the success of the Bridgewater Canal helped to inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania.
