Burlesque Workshop with Hattie Go Lucky
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities Editor
Burlesque is often seen as an untouchable art form, inhabited by big personalities that drip with high glamour and a total command of the stage. However, even the most seasoned acts have to start somewhere. You can take your first besparkled steps into risqué performance with a burlesque workshop in the art of striptease with Hattie Go Lucky.
Over the course of an evening, you’ll embrace your inner burlesque star. Using veil fans and feathers you’ll learn how to incorporate comedy into your performance as well as learning some core principles of pacing and engaging the audience. Participants are asked to bring a spare robe with them (feathers will be provided). What you wear to the session is up to you though, rock up in your comfiest slacks or don your most glamorous burlesque gear.
Hattie Go Lucky is an international burlesque artist known for their routines featuring Charlie Chaplain and a sweet old lady’s not so sweet old ride on a roller coaster. Their particular style of performance is tongue in cheek and as heartwarmingly funny as it is uninhibitedly seductive.
It must be noted, this workshop is strictly for over 18s, however, it is open to any level of experience. Perhaps you have a background in dance and want to give something different a try, or perhaps you’re looking to find something outside of your comfort zone to help build body confidence and give you a better relationship with yourself. Perhaps you’re just bored and looking to shake things up. Whatever reason you find yourself drawn to burlesque, you can expect to have a whole lot of fun and be met with zero judgement.
Those who have access, mobility or other health issues are advised to get in contact prior to the workshop so that reasonable adjustments can be made.
The session takes place at Swarthmore, a centre for adult learning of all kinds. Check out their website for further classes, workshops and events.
