The Northern Wine school has been educating the public on what tipple best suits their taste buds for five years now. Recently they’ve introduced gin tasting and afternoon tea events, where you can sample numerous gins with well suited mixers alongside a traditional afternoon tea. Their relaxed and sociable tastings are a great way to refine an already seasoned palette or discover the depth of flavour to be found in wine, whiskey, sake and gin for the first time.
the Northern Wine School will talk you through the process and history of gin as well as specific information about each drink
Although the Northern Wine school run tasting events for all kinds of beverages, their new event, gin tasting and afternoon tea at the Malmaison, is going down a storm. On a relaxed Saturday afternoon, in a private dining room overlooking the canal, you’ll try six different gins with mixers and garnishes that are designed to show each gin in its best light. As each drink is sampled, John Callow from the Northern Wine School will talk you through the process and history of gin as well as specific information about each drink. Knowing what botanicals have been used in the distilling process can really help you embrace the more subtle textures in a beverage.
John Callow, who runs the Northern Wine School and hosts tastings, is an independent educator with a passion for helping people find their new favourite bar order. As someone without any affiliations with a particular alcohol seller his choices of distilleries and gins are based purely on personal taste. As someone who has spent a lot of time in the industry and is currently a Diploma level WSET educator, John’s knowledge and opinions are definitely ones to be trusted.
Some of the local names you may find cropping up in John’s gin events include, Three Rivers as well as The Four Sisters gin distilleries. Occasionally, when distillers are available, they will attend the tastings themselves and talk about the origins of their distillery as well as the gins they are currently working on.
If gin isn’t for you then be sure to check the Northern Wine School’s website where you’ll find details of their wine, sake and whiskey tasting events.
