Castlefield Gallery

Castlefield Gallery, with its forward-thinking schedule of exhibitions, perfectly achieves the goals of this small but influential gallery. Established by artists in 1984, this vital arts space is the first public contemporary visual art gallery to have opened in Manchester and has gone on to become a key part of the North of England’s cultural fabric. For example, over the past three decades, Castlefield Gallery alumni have included several Turner Prize-winning artists and nominees.

The gallery itself offers a public programme of exhibitions, projects and events at its main space on the edge of Manchester’s charming Castlefield district. Recent exhibitions included a series of two-artist shows, chosen especially in order to complement one another’s work, and tease out the more and less obvious connections. Castlefield’s cutting-edge programming continues to dazzle audiences, with the curators’ ability to stay ahead of the trends, while continuing to support emerging artists with various residency and development opportunities.
