Calling Manchester writers. A free workshop.
Jul 15, 2010 | Comments: 0
It’s not often you get something for free, but Creative Tourist is running a writing workshop in Manchester this month – and we have two free places to offer to Creative Tourist readers.

The workshop is being run in association with journalist and blogger Kate Feld, Creative Tourist’s editor, Susie Stubbs and the writer Andrew Shanahan. It’ll be small (a maximum of 15 places) and practical: it covers basic journalism and writing for the web. It is not a creative writing workshop – it is aimed at freelance journalists looking to sharpen their skills.
Why are we running it? Both Kate and Susie are passionate about developing and supporting young and emerging writers in Manchester – that’s why, for example, Creative Tourist commissions paid-for guest posts from the city’s bloggers each month. We know it can be hard to get a toehold in the world of freelance journalism and harder still to get critical feedback on your work.
Most of the places for the workshop have been allocated to Manchester-based writers and bloggers Kate and Susie already know about. But we are also offering two places to Creative Tourist readers (and writers).
The workshop will run at Cornerhouse on 29 July (1-3pm). Anyone who would like to attend must:
- Have been previously published in at least one online or print magazine, newspaper or journal (your own blog or personal publications/projects won’t suffice);
- Be based in or close to Manchester;
- Supply a 300-word sample of their writing, which should be in the form of a short news piece about an exhibition, event, festival or gig of their choice (sent as a Word document);
- Supply a 1-paragraph biography (name, address, contact details, writing history and details of previously published work).
If you’re interested, send your submission to info at creativetourist dot com by 4pm on Wednesday 21 July. The title of the email should be ‘writing workshop’. We’ll then get in contact with our two chosen writers on Thursday 22 July. If you haven’t heard from us by 26 July this means you haven’t made it through (sorry). Good luck!
Special thanks to Cornerhouse for the loan of their space for this workshop.
