If you’re second hand shopping in Manchester, head to Urmston, and the Shaw Trust, for proper bargains

The entire town of Urmston, on the outskirts of Greater Manchester, is thrifting heaven with a big cluster of reasonably-priced charity shops spread over just a few streets.

Mary Portas’ recent advice to charity shops to glam up and charge more doesn’t seem to have made it to Urmston, where you can often pick up a whole outfit, including shoes, and still have change from £20. The pick of a great bunch is the Shaw Trust, which is next door to the inevitable Gregg’s in the new outdoor precinct. It’s bigger than most of the other shops, so you can have a good old rummage without feeling claustrophobic or worrying about racks toppling over on you.

It’s clean and well-presented, and the stock is a lot less packed with last season’s Primark or George at Asda than many charity shops, with more of an emphasis on classic, long-lasting fashion.
