Our own Chetham’s Library is one of the stars of this summer’s Manchester International Festival. For starters, mystic hero Dr. John Dee, the subject of Damon Albarn’s opera, used to live here. And then there’s violinist Alina Ibragimova’s multimedia musical collaboration with the Quay Brothers, getting rave reviews in the reading room. We think it’s about time this hidden gem got a bit more recognition. Jonathan Schofield talks to Chief Librarian Michael Powell about Chetham’s fascinating history. Who said libraries were quiet places?
